Dr. Mrinal Chatterjee, a media educator, author and trainer from Odisha, India and works as a professor and center head in the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Dhenkanal, visited JECRC University, Jaipur on 14th August, 2017 and gave an informative lecture on the importance of writing in media.
Dr.Neeraj khattri(HoD) and Mr. Shailendra Pratap Singh Bhati, respected members of the faculty from the JMC department introduced  Dr. Mrinal Chatterjee in an illustrious manner.

“Peace to Camera is significant in front of the camera as it gives clarity and improves language. Improving language should be treated as a skill to be honed and one should strive to constantly write to improve the skill of writing”, he told the students.
The session was very fruitful as it taught about the significance and the need of writing. Dr. Chatterjee clarified that writing is must in almost all zones of media career whether it is print media, television work, radio jockey or anchoring as writing is the key for all platforms.
Students were briefed about the importance and scope of journalism and mass communication in the session. According to him, the importance of articulation for writing is very important as it improves our language.  If we constantly write it can also help us in increasing our vocabulary. Best way of improving our writing skills is by improving our reading skills. He advised that media students need to have good grammar; a smart stock of words to use and ornamental kind of language should not be used as it may confuse the reader.
Mr. Mrinal Chatterjee explained the different forms of journalistic writing. Inverted Pyramid Style, which puts the most important details foremost, is used for news writing while Diamond Style or Hourglass Style which links the story of a specific person with the larger topic is used for writing features. An article presents comments on certain issues, columns can be written by an individual on any subject and editorials present the concerned views of a newspaper on an event and are written with serious tone.

Dr. Chatterjee responded on the question of usage of dialect languages instead of proper languages by news portals by saying, “We should welcome every language because language itself is not a pond but a river.  Although care must be taken that our own language does not vanish.” He also conveyed that the future of magazine journalism (narrative journalism) is bright in India and the free voice of media cannot be curtailed by political elements of any kind.
At the conclusion of the session a memento was presented to Dr. Chatterjee with heart-felt gratitude. He left us by saying that art of writing is integral in the field of Journalism and Mass Communication.
